Free membership for all PhD Teaching Students

Do you know what a UK union does, and how important
membership can be to you, NOW, and in the future?

A UK union is an organisation that can be joined by members of staff in any workplace, in order to be supported in countless different ways throughout their working lives. There are unions for each type of work, and the University and College Union (UCU) can be joined by, and will represent, academic and professional/academic-related staff.

As a PhD teaching student, you are eligible to join, free of charge for a 12 month period, colleagues who are lecturers, teachers, trainers, instructors, researchers, administrators, computer specialists or librarians, (Grade 6 and above), who are already members of our UCU Union. Postgraduate Research students, who do not teach, are also eligible for full membership in a ‘Postgraduate Researcher membership’ category, which is not free of charge but is charged at the lowest membership rate. They are eligible to participate in all levels of UCU democracy and to receive all benefits that student members cannot receive. However, they are not eligible to take part in industrial action ballots.

Take a look at our explanatory leaflet, Recruitment Leaflet PhDs, above, to find out more.
