The Nelson Mandela Scottish Memorial Foundation has launched a campaign to raise funds to create a statue of Nelson Mandela in 2018, to celebrate the centenary of his birth.  This is also the 25th anniversary of his visit to Glasgow in 1993 to collect the Freedoms of nine UK cities.

The  Foundation notes that the statue in Glasgow will provide a physical reminder of the need for us all to continue to fight against racism, in all its forms. A proportion of the monies raised will fund an educational programme to ensure that future generations understand apartheid in South Africa and the life of Mandela, and its lessons for human rights and challenging racism, and on taking action for a better world.

The campaign aims to raise £250,000. Any branches wishing to donate can do so online at
