Advance notice of ‘final offer’ communication on Friday 28 April

The higher education committee (HEC) met on 21 April and made a number of important decisions in regards to the next steps in this year’s pay negotiations.

The purpose of this update is to provide branches with advance notice that on Thursday 27 April, the national employers’ representatives at UCEA will make a final offer in this negotiating round. Reports of the New JNCHES negotiations can be found here.

On Friday 28 April the final offer will be communicated to branches and members. HEC has agreed that branches will be asked to feedback members’ views on whether they accept the final offer and, if not are they prepared to take part in industrial action after a sustained get the vote out campaign and whether UCU should ballot members in the autumn.

Please look out for a further communication this Friday 28 April containing a link to the online consultation and organise branch meetings to allow members to feedback their views.

The deadline for responses is Friday 12 May. HEC appreciates this is a tight window for members’ feedback. The reason is that the HE national negotiators will meet the following week to consider the feedback as part of their report to HE sector conference, which will be sent to branches on Friday 19 May.

HEC has also agreed that a confidential briefing of HE conference delegates will take place on Friday 26 May on the eve of Congress to discuss the feedback from branches and the negotiators’ report.

Best wishes

Paul Bridge
UCU head of higher education
