We can offer you support and answer questions …

Dear Member,

We would like to remind you that your Union Branch is able to offer support and answer questions about any aspect of your job role.  In particular, we are aware that some colleagues have been invited to meetings by their managers to informally discuss underperformance.  We would recommend that you seek union advice if you are ever invited to such a meeting.  Similarly, you should seek union advice if you are requested to respond to questions about performance in writing.

For advice, you should contact Pam McGibbon (UCU Administrator) on email PMcgibbon2@ucu.org.uk.

These conversations are usually supportive and should not cause you concern. However, we are aware of members attending several meetings without establishing the nature and purpose of those meetings. UCU has experience of these kinds of conversations and it is important that all involved are clear about what any meeting seeks to achieve.

The above advice obviously does not apply to those meetings which are a normal part of performance review for all colleagues, such as Achieving Success or Probation update meetings.

Kind regards,

Pam McGibbon
