Sally Hunt re-elected as UCU general secretary
Sally Hunt has been re-elected as UCU general secretary with nearly 60% of votes cast. Sally said: ‘I intend to deliver on the democratic mandate I have been given. That means increasing support for members when they need it most and redoubling our efforts to campaign on issues like Brexit, casualisation, pay and privatisation.’ More details including full result here.

Dear colleague,

As you may be aware, I have been re-elected as UCU’s general secretary receiving close to 60% of votes cast.

I would like to thank my opponent Jo McNeill for her campaign and indeed thank every UCU member who put their head above the parapet to stand for election this year. How wonderful for our union by the way that the most senior elected post in the union was contested on this occasion by two women.

The results of the elections for the national executive committee (NEC) and officer posts will be announced tomorrow and I look forward to working with those elected. While there is much agreement about the challenges the union faces, this general secretary election gave members the opportunity to choose between two different approaches. Given the hard fought nature of the election, I am delighted that members chose my plan for our future.

I intend to deliver on the democratic mandate I have been given.

That means increasing support for you when you need us most;

That means redoubling our efforts to campaign for staff on issues like Brexit, casualisation, fair pay, and privatisation; and

That means giving you an increased, active role in the decision making of the union.

I hope all sections of the union will unite to help deliver this vital agenda.

Whether you voted for me or not please be assured that I will work every day in office to make our voice heard.

Sally Hunt
UCU general secretary
