Governance Act
We have received an update from the higher education minister, Shirley-Anne Somerville, on the timescales for implementing the governance act and outlining when different aspects of the act will come into force.  The letter received is attached.  In line with what we’d previously been informed the provisions of the act were commenced at the turn of the year, meaning that the change to academic freedom is now in force.  The provisions around the election of the chair of the governing body come into force on 30 June this year, but if the process is already underway then the pre-existing process will run its course. The measures around the composition of the governing body (the trade union positions etc.) came into force on 30 December but have a four year transition period meaning institutions will not need to be fully compliant with that aspect of the act until 30 December 2020.
